‘Dreamworld’ series, left to right: ‘Discernment’, ‘Cull’, ‘Curio’,
ARTIST STATEMENT
Presently I am working on the subject of my personal dreams. Dreams are akin to one-time film ‘screenings’ and are often full of mystical undertones. They have long been thought to foreshadow, reveal, and provide a vessel for subliminal and intimate truths.
Whilst some dreams are shown once and then lost forever, a select few resonate heavily or repeat on end as if to urgently tell you something…
The Magical Realistic ideal to embrace elements of the ‘fantastical’ and the ‘fact’ piqued my interest due to William Blake’s allegorical scenes which I am enamoured by. By painting my dreams, I acknowledge that they are no longer mine, but find solace that they are no longer my burden to bear. I give myself time during the process to indulge in overthinking, but its completion is the boundary which frees me from this destructive habit. Recording any thoughts is a way of clearing your mind, and the translation of an ideal into a physical object is very intriguing to me.
Moreover, oil paintings have a consecrated connotation which I wanted to ‘dim’ with lesser cherished but underrated practices of decoration, caricature, and abstract subject matter.
The ‘Dreamworld’ series takes powerful dreams and invites you to decipher the composition and meaning, whilst directing you to ponder the subliminal symbolism in your own lives.
